asia or alberta

one of the funniest things that has happened to me since coming to toronto happened while i was waiting for a GO train with my friend, who is also in the training program with me, chinese, and from calgary. all this information is relevant to the story.

so we were waiting on the train platform waiting for the train to take us back into toronto when this guy asked us if the next train stops in clarkson. neither of us knew since we're both new to the city, so i looked on the train schedule i had. the train did stop at clarkson, and the guy thanked us and started telling us how he has driven for over 20 years and this is the first time he has taken the train because his car is in the shop. i told him that both of us used to drive everywhere back home too, but not since moving to toronto. we lived in the oil-loving province of alberta, of course we drove. then the guy's like "are you two from asia?" and it was so hard not to start laughing when i replied, "no, alberta!"

on another note, looks like the snow might be here to stay. and today is the first day we turned on the heat in our apartment. our windows are really crappy and let in cold air like nobody's business. i don't feel it so much in my room because my window is on the other side of the room, but both my roommates either can't sleep because of the sound of the wind, or find it hard to do work in her room because it's too cold. i guess i'm lucky, i sleep like a baby.

  • I wished it started snowing here in Vancouver. Instead it was foggy for just about the entire week (which was cool, but still), and now it has started raining (again). Boo!

  • This makes me think of the time when I visited Disneyland in LA with my friends some 10 years back. People (especially elderlys) kept asking if we were from China, no matter how many times we stressed that we were from Canada! And of course, there's the gas station guy, after seeing our Albera car plate, asked if Alberta was in California.

  • i love vancouver, but my roommate brought up a good point, we've only been there in the summer when there's nice weather. i don't know if i can handle the wet winters. nothing like the dry alberta weather, year round, i miss that.
